For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. ~Romans 6:23
This month we celebrate Valentine’s Day. This is a day of love towards your family, friend or someone you may admire. You may spend big money on this day trying to impress this person or make additional time for them, just to say “I love you”.
I asked my husband what he wanted this year for Valentine’s Day. And he said “nothing.” When I asked “why?” He said that Valentine’s Day is not for men, but for women. That really made me think! You know what, he’s right…
This world has created another day, to capitalize on our vulnerabilities. To make money. It’s quite sad if you really think about it. If you have someone to love, you try and spend money or extra time to prove your love. And unfortunately if you don’t have someone in your life, you are depressed and sad. Because you feel like a loser. Or you try to take your mind off this day, by hanging out with your girls or guys. Trying to convince yourself that you are not a loser.
It’s ok to want to show your loved one some “extra” attention, but God wants us to show love towards one another EVERY DAY. And that’s exactly what my husband said! Wow. You know what? He was right (for once). Ok, most times… but that made me think about the rest of the world.
How do you really love? Is it unconditional? What kind of love do you show your family or friends? Co-workers? Or even strangers and God forbid – enemies?
When I wrote “What does the bible say about love?”, I wanted you to know God’s definition of love. The bible teaches us that love is a strong emotion. It’s something that we choose to be in or out of. I know this may seem impossible, because we always say “I don’t know what happened? I just fell in love with him or her!” But after reading His word, you will come to see that love is a decision. You can’t just “fall into” something!
The only way to really love is to walk as Jesus and use Him as an example. We can’t truly learn how to love without looking at Him. We are taught how to love and we should teach our kids how to love with God as an example. Our kids mimic everything we do – good and bad. And to be honest, some of us are not doing a good job. We continue to repeat the same cycles that need to be changed. We try to fill our voids of love by replacing them with people. And we need to stop the cycle by telling our kids that what we have been doing is all wrong and God is the only true way to love!
Our relationship with God should come first. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins. This is the ultimate act of love! We would not be offered eternal life, until God allowed this to happen. We were destined to eternal death! I’m so glad to know that God loved us so much, that he allowed this to happen. I know I couldn’t do it… I’m too selfish to sacrifice my one and only son!
So this Valentine’s Day, don’t get caught up in all of the material and hustle and bustle of this day! It’s not supposed to be stressful or self centered. You should show your love for one another everyday. Because God wants it that way.
Be blessed,
